Sense of self - The Identity Crisis

Well, there might be a reason why we are endowed with consciousness while rest of the other species aren't. Why despite having the same spectrum of visibility, we all have different visions. We all live our life with similar five sense organs on the same planet yet our experiences are much varied. In the end, we all have different stories to narrate to the world. Why so different when we all function biologically the same way. Well, there is an answer to it. See we are all the same machine taking the same information but the processing of that information varies from individual to individual and why so because more than anything else we are individuals.

Unfortunately, instead of celebrating our individuality, we are suppressing it to conform to the general idea of society. Instead of putting forth our uniqueness in in this world we are stifling it down for the consolations of the crowds and what do we lose in doing so - our humanness, our very personhood.  Eleanor Roosevelt said, "when you adopt the standards and values of someone else you surrender your own integrity and become to the extent of your surrender less human being." The very nature of human beings is to narrate its story. It's our inherent desire. We are all storytelling animals. Everything that we do, our every action, be it in the form of love or work is actually the narration of that story to other people and that story is only worth listening to if it carries our individuality - our authentic self.

Every great artist Beethoven, Mozart, Van Gogh, Leo Tolstoy, Picasso or artists from recent history like Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain is only considered great because they were courageous enough to put forth their individuality in their work. Being an artist is putting forth your individuality. Write what you experience, Paint what you see, Sing what you feel. Individuality spurs innovations, keeps life and culture captivating, forces society to continue to evolve. It's a vital part of the society. we should be respectful of each other's individuality and let's break the wrong notion of masculinity and femininity. it's normal to have feminine characteristics in male's body or masculine characteristics in the female's body. In the book sapiens where it says"biology enables and culture forbids." Biologically everything that is possible is natural. You just need x and y chromosomes to be a male and couple of X chromosomes to be a female but there is the whole lot cultural baggage we need to carry to be a man or woman or masculine or feminine. Virginia once wrote that there resides a male and a female in everyone's mind. In a male, it's the male one that is dominant and in the female, it's the female one but the normal and comfortable state of being is that when the two live in harmony together spiritually cooperating - an androgynous mind.

Individualism is not at all selfish. Individualism and personalization are moral and social processes. They are nothing less than humanity's quest for personal freedom and responsible self-expression and it's only when we grasp this idea of individuality and understand that we are all individuals and bound to be different that we might bring down the hostility between gender differences, hostility between people of different sexual orientations or of different sexual choices, hatred between people of different personality or ethnicity or religion or anything the divide us or makes us intolerant towards someone who is not like us. So be who you are even when it appears completely crazy to other people because this world is in desperate need of your uniqueness. We all want to listen to your unique story, not of somebody else's. So be who you are
