Why Steve Jobs lived Distorted Reality

"People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do" - once been the finishing line of Apple's commercial that resurrected it from its deathbed to reaffirm its glory which was once visioned by Steve Jobs, speaks of none as much as it of him and precisely this was the reason why he had to drop his voice from the final airing of the commercial and instead play the actor  Richard Dreyfuss's voice-over for he never wanted people to think of him but Apple. Alas! every time we hear this be it in any voice its just him we can't help but think of -  Steve Jobs - The larger than life figure. For one part he really did change the world - from dabbling around with circuit boards in a garage to crafting exquisite gizmos that ensures the status quo of millions of people attributes to the magnitude of change he along with woz have caused. And the other as to be crazy - he really was one - a crazy person. Not just that the people who had been around him complained of his eccentric behavior but he even for himself sometimes made such choices that would have made you rethink his mental state.  but Whatever may people accuse him of- be it crazy, maniac, jerk or ruthless but for Steve, his every aberration in his behavior stemmed from his constant denial of the reality or to stick to the terminology it would be - distortion of reality.

Being abandoned by his biological parents to being thrown out of his own company, have very often left Steve disappointed by reality. To understand him, at first one needs to understand the vulnerabilities that once surrounded him in his adolescence. Doesn't this surprise you the man who was complicit in "no poaching" conspiracy of silicon valley  also once insisted to be a monk or he who dropped out of college, lived in subsistence, flew all the way to the other side of the globe to seek spirituality and inner peace also ruined his serenity in the quest for perfection. Steve Jobs was a contradiction in himself. Nobody proved him wrong as much as he himself.

Frankly What fascinates me in Steve is not what he became of as an old corporate guy who is now revered as the most influential entrepreneur of the 21st century but when he was just a hippie, a young goofy person who went around without shoes, dropped acid and was open to almost everything that helped him shape his own reality whether it was following the counter-culture that promised of sweeping the dead ideologies or living solely on starchless food that he thought would help him purify his body and soul. You might not know but once Steve to arrange the money for his trip to India decided to work in Atari and to get hired there Steve reached up to the Atari's place asked the receptionist " I want a job here and I am not leaving unless I am hired." If this makes you think of him as a rebel and stubborn wait till he grows up to deny the paternity of his own child with the same zeal he insisted on getting that job. now, do you still think of him as a rebel? well, he could be for his rebellion was not against good or evil but against his own reality. For the things he didn't want, he would go to any extreme to deny its existence even if its a fetus carrying his DNA.

For Steve, his will to distort the reality helped him nowhere more than in Apple. He pushed people to believe in things that were otherwise thought impossible. his uncompromising approach to get the perfection even for things that were too fine to catch any sight is the reason why Apple products despite its royalty never forget the simplicity. He might have been a pirate of silicon valley who gathered up things and made something new out of it but for the beauty that we see in Apple products and the elegance with which it is made that makes our hand crave for it is because of Steve's adherence to art as much as it was to science. He knew the real innovation is only in the marriage of technology with art,  and in achieving so he was often ridiculed or accused of wasting time on petty and frivolous things but again his distortion of reality made him stick to it and pushed him through.

But whats depressing though is that the same attitude of denying the reality that made him rebel as a youth, helped him design some finest and exquisite products, glorified Apple to be the most valuable company on the earth, betrayed him at the face death. Steve after being diagnosed with cancer delayed the surgery thinking he might get away with it by some unconventional methods. He tired zen meditation and weird vegan food, visiting "spiritualists" and using other treatments he found on the internet but unlike in the past, he was eluded this time and eventually caused his death. The man who is often said to be a genius died of his own stupidity.
