How the War on Online Piracy is Unethical

On 20th July 2016 founder of Kickass Torrent was arrested in Poland leading to the shutdown of the website. Soon after internet deluged with outpouring support for the man and once again rekindled the eternal debate on online piracy. Increasing government crackdown on torrent sites has annoyed millions of people across the world who see their access to piracy as their democratic right. So let's know how it is indeed our right and how a war on online piracy is a war on democracy.

If you look into the very core mechanism of these torrent sites, what they do is that they let you share something that you have with someone who doesn't have. It is that simple. Sharing is one of the greatest virtue of a human being. Sharing of knowledge, sharing of information, sharing of happiness, sadness - that is what has thrived us for years. Humans could have extinct long back in the ice age if they would have come collectively shared each others courage,  knowledge, and power to face such adverse natural calamity. Think of Leonardo da Vinci if he wouldn't have a desire to write all those information on a piece of paper and share it with us we wouldn't have this modern world we are so proud of.  Sharing is the core ingredient of human progress and if you are stopping it you're endangering the whole of humanity.

Humans always feel threatened by any alien objects that come and disrupt the ongoing customs and culture. They take it as unholy, unethical and immoral but in fact, those are the things that change the world. Those are the things that take us forward. For instance if you look into music industry 100 yrs back musicians used to play live on the street making their money, earning their  living and then gramophone came and they all were upset as people won't listen to them live, they will just buy the record once and they tried to ban it but a few years later it turned out to be a really good thing as people bought more records they wanted more music in their life and it grew the engagement and then little later radio came and they were upset all over again as people won't buy the record they will listen on radio for free and they tried to ban it too but again it grew the audience with the rising number of sales and then walkman happened.  The same thing repeated again. The industry got upset as people will get it recorded from the radio just once they will not buy the records and they were again wrong in telling the future as it again grew audience with the rise in the number of engagement. And the same thing is repeating all over again for online piracy and they are again wrong in telling the future because online piracy is not making them lose their business is actually helping them increase the audience and number of sales.  You cannot ban an idea you have to walk along by changing yourself and this is how the bicycle of invention goes.

war on piracy

Online piracy has not devalued Hollywood. Instead, it has escalated it. Let me tell you how. Any product that wants to penetrate a new market what does they do. They give you a trial version for a month or two to let you know the perks and benefits of it and thereafter it becomes incumbent in your life and you start paying to keep the subscription on and that's precisely how online piracy as helped hollywood expand their market beyond their boundaries for instance Indians won't try their hands at anything new unless it is not for free and the fact that Hollywood makes a good business in India is because of the interest created by the torrent sites by letting us download it for free in the first place. It has increased their fan base their popularity their brand value and with the rise in the number of people visiting the theatre.

85% of the world's wealth is in the hand of 15% people and 15% of the world's wealth is in the hands of 85% people. This is a dichotomized world we live in where one cannot afford a meal and other can't decide which meal. This is the ugly truth and it is getting much worse and no matter how much of money Bill Gates donate the gap isn't going to reduce because the gap wasn't created by lack of money. It was created by the lack of information. Knowledge is power and that is what they don't want to give us despite the fact it's actually we who give them the power. Torrent give us the power to enjoy things which we cannot afford, give us the knowledge which wasn't mean to be in our minds, give us the liberty to raise our standards. Think of all those software of which you cannot buy the subscription. Think of all those documentaries and movies of which you cannot buy the tickets. otherwise, there will be a handful of rich dad kids getting all the information and all the knowledge and the skills and making all the fortune as always and we lacking behind as always. Torrent is a sort of bridge that connects these two completely different worlds on the same planet and no matter how much these elites try to break that bridge we need to keep it connected until it reaches equilibrium.
