Nothing has contributed to the progress of mankind as much as a free will. Eradicating superstition, breaking down dogma and abandoning servitude has not just bloomed us as a free individual but it also gave us the leverage to grant our uniqueness to the world. While smooth and short this journey might seem seen from the high skylines of the 21st century but it often required immense courage to refute those very people who seem to have provided the foundation of our education. It sometimes meant to teach law to the lawmakers even at a gunpoint. It meant screaming and fighting for the rights. And such acts of bravery wasn't carried out by priests, or aristocrats or ministers but very often by a common man like you and me.
Mr. Robot is the portrayal of the same common man who refuses to be the toy in the elite-run world. With the advent of the internet, much of the power that resided in the accumulation of physical property is now in the virtual reality. The one who owns this digital world gets to rule the real world. The one who controls your attention gets to control you as well. Whats scary is not that we are puppets in the hands of these elites but that we don't realize it and this has left us vulnerable to the hands of very same people who promise us of a better lifestyle. Though most of us have turned blind eye to it, few of us can't resist their temptation to poke their nose in it. For them, it's an itch that needs a scratch- a bug that needs fixing. They are like a neo in the matrix.
While for Elliot the reason to take down the biggest conglomerate, Evil Corp might have been the Toxic waste release that caused his father's death but it wasn't just that. With his father's early death and thence brought up by a cruel and indifferent mother has forced Elliot to take refuge in the solitude. When at despair and crisis others hug their close ones, Elliot snorts a long line and crouches back to sleep. The whole idea of shattering the biggest conglomerate in the world could be boiled down to just a desire to make a connection - a virtual connection to other people which sometimes leads him to something that he wouldn't approve of morally even though it might be much celebrated in real life like Evil Corp. For most of the history, heroism has been much about upholding the moral virtues even if it requires to stand against the laws. And very dishearteningly anyone who ever summoned enough courage to do so had either been killed or caged.
